Helotes Live Oak Remote Sensing Study
Helotes stands in the shadow of San Antonio, the 8th largest city in the Country. Seeking to improve the quality of life for its citizens, an Urban and Community Forestry Partnership Grant was requested to help preserve the condition and long-term health of the City's urban forest. This was to be accomplished by locating and identifying trees protected under the current landscape and preservation ordinance. Additionally, the locations (created within a GIS) of all oak wilt infestations and potential oak wilt areas were also collected.

This fascinating project included the use of spectral analysis of trees. Using aerial photography and ESRI software tools, tree spectral signatures were analyzed and then ground checked for accuracy. This data, along with diameter, condition, health, hazardous conditions, etc., were all entered into the GIS. The result was then available by the City to make critical management, planning, and budgetary decisions regarding tree needs.
